When Life Gives You Lemons

We’ve all heard it before, more times than we ever cared to…

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

I always understood this phrase, even at a young age, but just like everything else in life, I never really appreciated it until now. It only took me 38 years to get it, and I say that only half-jokingly.

So, here I am, in my 10th year of the CrossFit Open, and the first week of the Open is already almost complete. The first WOD was a 15 min AMRAP: 19 Wall Balls, and 19 Calories Row. Simple and to the point.

However, I am already sh** outta luck.

Last Wednesday, I slipped on some black ice and landed smack on the back of my head. Ouch.

I was hoping that I’d be okay enough to do it tomorrow (Monday) for at least a score, but alas, my neck is still too stiff and painful. While I can look side to side, I cannot look up whatsoever, which obviously means wall balls are not happening. Nor would it be smart for me to force it. I have far more important things going on than getting a score submitted online.

I’ll take the zero.

In years passed, this would have been DEVASTATING!! Today, though, as I sit here typing this, I have absolutely no regrets or bitterness about it. I am still going to do what I can. Tomorrow, I’m going to do a 15 min AMRAP: 19 DB Thrusters with 5#, and 19 Calories Row. It will be slow and controlled.

And, it won’t count for the online Open. But, it WILL COUNT for my own fitness and character.

Whether I have a score submitted on the Leaderboard or not, it has zero impact on my actual fitness. I can still do something, just not this week’s prescribed workout. Yes, it sucks and it’s annoying. I could choose to look at it as a waste of $20, and decide to not do the other four WODs. Or, I could choose to accept this as yet another fun challenge. How can I turn this lemon into lemonade?!

Life will always be unpredictable and unfair, but it can also be beautiful and fun.

Choose your own path.
